Amsterdam Sanctuary: A Century-Old Canal-View Home Transformed into a Modern Art Oasis
In the heart of Amsterdam, the art-loving couple have created a modern home full of character and serenity. Michael Camacho and his partner Philipp have lived in major cities around the world, but for their last move, they chose the Dutch capital, a city full of history and culture. In 2023, they bought a century-old house overlooking the canal in the city center, although it is located in the busy city center, but the bedroom can see the quiet garden, and only birds and church bells can be heard on the roof, giving people a comfortable experience of quiet in the noise.
The couple liked modern simplicity, but instead of a complete renovation, they turned their home into their own private museum. The 170-square-meter two-storey apartment has no complex design, but is full of character thanks to unique artwork and exquisite furniture. With the help of Dutch interior designer Toula Alexander, they preserved the original style of the house while creating some bold and personal arrangements that both respect the building's historical sense and show contemporary urban charm.
Art is everywhere in the home. The walls, bookshelves, and floors display works of art of all sizes, including paintings, photography, modern art, and classical works. A work by Sophie Bayntun, a young British artist, hangs by the window, where she often watches the boats on the canal. The pronkkamer of the living room (a special room used to receive distinguished guests in the Golden Age) has been modernized into a space full of flexibility, both for two people alone and for spending quality time with friends. The layout here emphasizes openness, with a living-dining area of about 90 square meters connected to the open kitchen, demonstrating the convenience and functionality of 21st century living.
For the Camachos, supporting young artists is just as important. They collect many contemporary art works to encourage young people and make these works into future classics. The work by Dutch artist Joost Krijnen, displayed in the home, despite its seemingly random brushstrokes, presents a remarkable overall effect that demonstrates Camacho's unique aesthetic for art.
In addition to art, the couple also have a great taste in craftsmanship and furniture, particularly medieval furniture, which is embellished with modern pieces. Travel inspiration is also evident throughout the apartment, which pays homage to the places they once lived through clever furnishings and design elements. The furniture and decorations include both Asian-style details and vintage furniture with English accents, giving the entire home layout a rich, stylistic aesthetic.
