From the initial contact along the long driveway, the fallen pine trees and the needles at the foot, every detail reveals whimsy, inviting the occupants to stop and savor the natural beauty around them.

The design process for the Retreat Residence was slow and deliberate, aiming to preserve the estate's rich heritage while injecting contemporary elements and a new identity. The design team carefully balanced elements of the past and the modern, such as the soft and subtle interaction of sandstone walls and SLATE floors with wood and linen, to create a space that is both historical and contemporary.

The design makes clever use of natural light, creating deep portals through the existing facades that guide light into the interior, while adding openings in other areas that allow natural light to filter in through the linen layers, casting a warm glow that illuminates the entire limestone decorated space.

Due to the uniqueness of the surrounding landscape, the Retreat Residence offers a true sense of seclusion, capturing the idea of isolation. The surrounding natural elements, such as fallen pines and needles, amplify a sense of immersion in a special place. The design team respected the site's past and brought a similar sense of layering from the surrounding woodland, making the Retreat Residence feel connected to the place on many levels.
