Minimalist Haven: Port Royal's Seaside Retreat
Located in the Duinbergen district of Knokke-Heist, the Port Royal Apartments have been transformed by Belgian architecture studio Decancq Vercruysse into a peaceful family resort for a family of five. This four-bedroom, four-bathroom apartment, reimagined by founding architect Emiel Vercruysse, distills the space to its purest form with minimalist design language, creating a soothing and welcoming atmosphere.
Vercruysse's "stripped to the core" design concept, the clever use of natural materials and simple layout, creates a quiet waterfront living experience. The open plan design takes full advantage of the apartment's sea views and brings a sense of inner peace. The whole design starts from the comfort needs of the family, making the family of five feel at home, but also provides a sense of intimacy when two people are alone.
In the choice of materials, Vercruysse shows originality. He chose natural Belgian oak and bleached oak as the core materials, and the floor was lime treated and embedded with small stones to echo the beach. This subtle detail not only mimics the texture of the beach, but also creates a soft natural color palette throughout the apartment. The use of wood also extends to the details of the apartment, with joinery handles in the kitchen inspired by design elements found on boats, echoing the beachfront theme of the entire space.
In addition, the custom design of furniture is also a highlight of this project. Whether sofa, stool, coffee table or dining table, all the furniture maintains the same material and form, enhancing the coherence of the interior design of the apartment. Of particular note is the custom-made multifunctional console, which is both an art installation and a practical one: the embedded TV can slide into hiding when not in use, giving guests unobtrusion-free views of the sea out the window.
Through carefully selected furniture, objects and the interaction of materials, Port Royal Apartments achieves the perfect balance of modern design and materials, allowing families to completely escape from the distractions of daily life and enjoy this exclusive quiet space. Vercruysse attributes the success of the project to the simplicity of the design language and the harmony of the materials, reflecting his deep understanding of nature and life.
Port Royal Apartments is a work of functional and aesthetic excellence, a perfect illustration of how minimalist design can provide peace of mind through pure materiality. Nestled in the tranquil Duinbergen district, the Port Royal Apartments have been masterfully transformed into a serene family sanctuary by Decancq Vercruysse. Embodying the minimalist design philosophy that "less is more," the space is a testament to the power of simplicity and the harmony of natural materials.
